Rodent Vasectomy Surgery (Course)
Objectives
- The goal of this e-learning module is to introduce the learner to performing a vasectomy on a male rodent. This course is meant to supplement the hands-on workshop and does not stand alone as a comprehensive lesson.
- This course contains video segments.
- This course demonstrates the procedure for surgical severing of the vas deferens in the rodent. For general surgery methods, such as aseptic technique and instrumentation, please refer to the Introduction to Rodent Surgery courses, and always follow your facility veterinarian recommendations, IACUC guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.

- Prepare and drape the animal
- Make a skin incision
- Penetrate the abdominal musculature
- Externalize the vas deferens and locate section to be removed.
- Cauterize and remove the isolated section.
- Place the two cut ends back in the abdominal cavity.
- Close the abdominal cavity and skin incision.
