Biomethodology of the Rat - Basic Techniques Course
One of the key factors in working safely and humanely with research rodents requires basic competency and understanding of handling and restraint methods of the rat research model. The goal of this workshop is to provide the novice/unfamiliar participant with the basic principles required to safely handle animals and introduce basic technical skills that are commonly used in research.

One of the key factors in working safely and humanely with research rodents requires basic competency and understanding of handling and restraint methods of the rat research model. The goal of this workshop is to provide the novice/unfamiliar participant with the basic principles required to safely handle animals and introduce basic technical skills that are commonly used in research.
Upon completion participants should be able to:
- Understand the role of the rat research model.
- Understand basic biology of the rat.
- Properly handle and restrain rats for routine procedures, e.g., physical exam, administration of medication, and venipuncture.
- Observe rats for recognition of normal and abnormal physical conditions and behavioral changes.
- Determine gender in young and adult rats.
- Demonstrate methods of identification.
- Demonstrate techniques for administration of medication by the following routes:
- Oral (PO)
- Subcutaneous (SC or SQ)
- Intraperitoneal (IP)
- Intradermal (ID)
- Intravenous (IV)
- Discuss/demonstrate appropriate methods of euthanasia.
