Biomethodology of the Rat - Advanced Techniques Course
One of the key factors in working safely and humanely with research rodents requires basic competency and understanding of handling and restraint methods of the mouse research model. The goal of this workshop is to provide the intermediate/advanced participant with the principles and skill sets required to safely collect blood samples as well learn humane euthanasia.

One of the key factors in working safely and humanely with research rodents requires basic competency and understanding of handling and restraint methods of the mouse research model. The goal of this workshop is to provide the intermediate/advanced participant with the principles and skill sets required to safely collect blood samples as well learn humane euthanasia.
Upon completion participants should be able to:
- Properly handle and restrain rats for routine blood collection procedures.
- Observe rats for recognition of normal and abnormal physical conditions and behavioral changes.
- Demonstrate techniques for sample collection by way of the following techniques:
- Intravenous (IV)
- Submandibular (SM)
- Saphenous vein sampling (SV)
- Cardiac puncture (C)
- Discuss/demonstrate appropriate methods of euthanasia.
- Perform secondary confirmation of euthanasia.
